Just came across an interesting article: Who clicks on ads? (Revisited with data) about the majority of people that click on online ads. Some interesting points like:

..heavy clickers are:

More representative of lower income households than the average user.

Less educated than the average user (or from less-educated environments in the case of minors).

More likely to live outside of the major metro regions.

More likely to be using SNSs to meet new people than the average user (who is more likely to be using SNSs to maintain connections).

This is also interesting:

Wealthier users are more likely to spend money online, but they are less likely to click on ads. Poorer users are more likely to click on ads, but not likely to spend money online except in a few verticals. Wouldn’t this then mean that Google is more likely to get the eyeballs of those likely to spend money, but statistically less likely to make money off of their clicks?

I was just checking my AdSense stats and on the Overview page under “Recent messages” I saw a new message from “Optimization Team” with the subject “April 2007 Optimization Report”. Interesting… I hadn’t seen anything like that before. This is what the message said:

April 2007 Optimization Report

Dear Publisher,

Here is your optimization report for the month of April. After an automatic review of your sites, we think you might be able to improve your monetization using the following tips:

You may be filtering ads that monetize well on your site.
How can I fix this? – Dismiss this tip.

We hope these tips are helpful, and encourage you to experiment using different layouts and formats–no two sites monetize the same way!

Sincerely,
Google Adsense

OK, cool – Google is telling me how I can make more money, nice :) Well, I have a few sites in the “Competitive Ad Filter” but I don’t think I have too many. It’s mostly just competing websites and sites that I’m an affiliate for (I want people to click the affiliate link on my site and not the one in the AdSense ad unit). So I’m not sure if I’m going to take this optimization tip seriously – like they said, it was an automatic review so you should definitely take it with a grain of salt.

It looks like they’re going to send AdSense publishers an optimization report every month which I think is pretty good – they might point out a few things that you forgot about and it can end up making you more money (and making Google more money, of course).

How about you – did you get any optimization tips from Google?

If you want more AdSense tips you should also check out the official AdSense blog. They often post some nice tips and news regarding the AdSense program, like this one about Introducing Google Apps referrals

People were never quite sure what Google was up to and what exactly they were planning to do with it – but today they published this press release that finally reveals their latest product: Google TiSP (Toilet Internet Service Provider).

An excerpt from their Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I switch to Google TiSP?

It’s good for you. Your FREE TiSP service includes a Google Toolbar-based analysis of your dietary habits and genetic predispositions, along with recommendations for healthier living.

How can Google offer this service for free?
We believe that all users deserve free, fast and sanitary online access. To offset the cost of providing the TiSP service, we use information gathered by discreet DNA sequencing of your personal bodily output to display online ads that are contextually relevant to your culinary preferences, current health status and likelihood of developing particular medical conditions going forward. Google also offers premium levels of service for a monthly fee (see below).
Note: We take your privacy very seriously. So we treat all TiSP users’ waste-related personal information with tremendous discretion, in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

They also have an install guide with step-by-step instructions – with pictures and everything.

In other Google news; they also added a new feature to Gmail that they call Gmail Paper. I think this is a great feature – I’ve always wanted to hold my e-mails in my hand. An excerpt from their page:

But what about the environment?

Not a problem. Gmail Paper is made out of 96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum, and thus, actually helps the environment. For every Gmail Paper we produce, the environment gets incrementally healthier.
