Easter Egg

There have been rumors and allegations that there was a so-called “easter egg” added to 2.6 early in its development. These rumors and allegations are completely false!

That got me curious… :) So I went on Google to research this further.

Unlocking the easter egg

Apparently what you need to do is after saving a post you scroll down to “Post Revisions” and then click one of the revisions. At that point you should be able to compare a revision with itself (by selecting both left and right radio buttons at the same revision and click “Compare Revisions”). What happens next is pretty cool.

Just as you should keep track of your affiliate commissions you should also check all your websites regularly – To make sure they’re up and running, everything looks like it should, no problems in the order process, etc. If you have several different websites you might forget one or two – especially if many parts of your online business are running on auto-pilot. You might have some sites that are more popular than others and you keep a closer eye on them – but don’t forget the little ones ;)

I’m writing about this because I just discovered that one of my websites got hacked. Some unscrupulous people exploited a security flaw in my website and inserted an iframe (that loaded some dubious websites) in the header of the templates. I’m using a popular system to run that particular website so I checked the forum and saw that I wasn’t the only one hit with this. So, fortunately I was able to fix it and get my site (sort of) back on track.

It’s always a good practice to regularly take backups of your important documents (that includes your websites and databases) ;) If you don’t have a backup you might be able to use the “cache:” command on Google – for example for this blog I would type “cache:http://www.hannesjohnson.com” into Google. The Wayback Machine could also help you – but they might only have a copy that’s a few months old (even older). The WP-DB-Backup plugin should come in handy if you want to backup your WordPress blog.

A few weeks ago this blog made it into the Technorati Top 100 and it has stayed there thanks to people continuing to add my blog as a favorite in Technorati. I’ve even climbed up a few places (but gone down again). Well, as always, I’ve been monitoring my web stats and I’ve noticed some clicks coming from that Top 100 page. So, it looks like being on that Top 100 list can bring you some extra traffic. Therefore, to make sure I stay on the Top 100 list (and hopefully climb up a few places) I’m having my first contest.

How To Enter

The rules are simple: Just add this blog to your Technorati favorites and comment on this post with your Technorati username to let me know you’ve added my blog. That’s it.

But I want to give people another option to enter this contest: If you have a blog you can write a post about this contest with a link to this particular post. By doing that you will get 5 additional entries into this contest.

Which means that if you add this blog to your Technorati favorites, make a comment and also post about the contest on your blog you will have 6 entries into this contest :)

If you make a blog post about this make sure to send a pingback/trackback — if you don’t see your trackback here after 24 hours you can e-mail me with a link to your post.

I will then create a list from all the entries and use a “random number generator” to pick a winner.

Deadline: You’ll have until the end of the month to enter. I will pick the winner on August 1st (or a couple of days after that).

Prizes

What, you want to you know what you can win? ;) Alright then, if you’re the lucky winner I will review your website and give you tips on SEO, design, monetization, etc… If you have a product/service I can also review that if you want. This will be similar to if you would buy a review through ReviewMe for $60. I will also send the winner $25 through PayPal. But, if you don’t want the “cash” prize you can choose to get a “Featured Site” link in the sidebar for 2 months instead – Remember, this is a PageRank 4 blog so that is easily worth $40-$60 (but I won’t link to any “bad” sites).

Bonus prize: If I manage to rank in the Top 50 by the end of this contest I will pick another winner that will also receive a website review (but no cash prize). So, you can double your odds by blogging about this and telling more people about this contest ;)

Right now 249 members have made this blog a favorite and blog #50 has 331 members – which means that in about 2 weeks over 80 (new) people need to add this blog as a favorite. I would say that’s definitely doable.

So I’ve decided to hire a moderator. At first I was going to check out some of the freelance sites but then I thought – why not see if my subscribers and blog readers would be interested in this?

Could you use some extra money? Do you think this is something for you?

Required skills

• Good English skills (if English is your first language that’s a plus)
• Attention to detail
• Be able to follow directions (I will give you videos with instructions)
• Be able to work independently (although I will be happy to guide you at first)

Responsibilities

• Log in as needed and moderate any new articles (approve/decline them)
• Report any repeated violations
• Report regularly to me
• Anything else I can think of ;)

You will be paid an hourly rate – qualified applicants will get the details.

This is a part-time job. Actually, the work required isn’t that much right now so it’s just a little extra spending money. Right now you would need to spend maybe 1-2 hours a week moderating new articles – but this will increase over time. However, the backlog of new articles is pretty big right now so you would need to spend some extra time initially to clear that out – which means quick bucks for you :)

Also, not sure if I need to mention this – but this will be an “off site” job meaning you can work from your home – no need to move to Iceland ;)

You will be paid through PayPal – so, if you don’t have a PayPal account and you can’t get one please don’t apply.
