Celebrate Every Little Victory And You Will Achieve More

March 6th, 2007 · 13 Comments · 1,454 views

I don’t know if I heard it first from the Nitro guys (Matt Gill and Kevin Wilke), Mark Joyner or some other internet marketing / personal development teacher. But I think it’s great advice and I’ve been following this advice the best I can.

Well, the trick is to celebrate every little victory - no matter how small it is. This can be something like:

  • You get a new subscriber on your mailing list
  • You get a new RSS subscriber
  • Your Technorati ranking goes up
  • Your Alexa ranking goes up
  • You get a new signup (to something like SFI or AGLOCO)
  • You sell a new product or subscription
  • You refer an affiliate sale
  • You discover that your site ranks high in the search engines for a popular key phrase
  • You make it to the front page of Digg (or some other social site)
  • …anything that is a victory for you - something that helps you in life, business, etc.

What you do to celebrate is up to you - as an example you could do the “jackpot gesture” and say “Cha-ching!” or do a little victory dance ;) You should do something that makes you happy and you want to remember that feeling. You want to feel that way again so that should help motivate you when you’re working on tasks - and hopefully it’ll help create more “little victories” in your life. If it’s a big victory you might even want to reward yourself with something.

Do you have any tricks to motivate you or make you work more efficiently?

Positive thinking is a natural trait for me these days.

Always look far ahead for the big goals - visualize it and you will achieve it.

    That’s what I believe.

That’s good advice! I tend to look at small victories with a “should have done better” mentality, but the truth is, progress is progress whether great or small.

Another thing would be like..you find that the traffic to your site has increased considerably, so this motivates you to write more… :-)

I usually celebrate my small victories, i call like minded people and express my victory i read alot of motivational books. However at the moment the Alexa ranking of one of my sites went down so i am feeling quite deflated. what are the reasons a sites Alexa ranking would go down considerably?

I agree! And you should put the Technorati Rank WordPress Plugin on your site! ;)

Felista - If your Alexa number decreases your site is actually doing better. A very popular site would have an Alexa ranking of something like 2,382 - but a site that doesn’t get much traffic could have the ranking 1,392,138. If your site goes down in the “Alexa ladder” it probably means that your site has been getting less traffic lately - or that a smaller percentage of your visitors are using the Alexa toolbar.

Doug Karr - hehe, you’re always plugging your plug-ins ;) But thanks for the tip - I’ll take a look at that plugin.

I love high-fiving with a co-worker when we hit certain marks for Agloco. I do a fist pump when I move up in Technorati. I get drunk as a sailor when a marketing idea works!

I like this–all the small things can really add up to be big things!

    Yes! One should do this
    positive thing, absolutely.

Booyah, I turned my computer on, 2 points, even better, opened up Firefox, 2 more points, this celebratory for every little thing is getting a little out of hand. Learn from your many many many mistakes and you will be successful, don’t be scared , life is a learning process, and if your still young, you still have a lot of time to get back anything you have lost through mistakes you have made.

Great post. A great business is built one small success, one little victory at a time. That’s how I was able to grow webmasterlabor.com from a one man shop back in 2003 to a 50+ staff company and growing.

Techified - hehe, nice :) Well, if you consider turning on your computer a victory then good for you ;) Hey, you might have had some problems with it and not been able to turn it on the last few days - but then you figure out how to fix it - Yay! Do a little dance… :)
