StatCounter now lets you label your visitors

February 28th, 2007 · 10 Comments · 1,210 views

I’ve been using StatCounter for a few years now and it’s my favorite invisible web tracker. I’ve been wishing for this feature for a long time and I think I e-mailed the StatCounter team and asked if they were going to implement this - but I’m not sure if I did… Either way, they read my mind ;)

Now you can put labels to IP addresses so you can recognize your visitors when they come back to your site. Like they say on the news release you can use it to:

  • Help you identify click fraudsters
  • Make it easier to see when “the competition” has visited your site
  • Identify recurring visitors
  • Let you see just how many times your mom has been admiring your site…

On that page they also have easy instructions for how you can use this feature:

  • Login to your account.
  • Click the stats for your project.
  • Click “Recent Visitor Activity”
  • Click the new “Label IP Address”
  • Give it a description and you’re DONE!

I think I’ll be using this feature a lot. Here is an example:

StatCounter - Label IP address

I know this is Gary because when I go to http://www.hannesjohnson.com/some…im-using/#comment-102 I go to the last comment made there which was made by Gary from MrGaryLee.com

After creating a label for Gary the stats look like this:

StatCounter - Label added

You are then free to delete or edit any of your labels.

Do you use StatCounter? Do you think this is a cool feature?

Hey Hannes . . . looks pretty interesting! I’m going to take a look into StatCounter and see if I can do the same thing! I guess I’ve been visiting the site a lot lately, huh?

    Hi Hannes,

We love StatCounter and we think the new feature is SUPER cool ;-)

We’re delighted that you like the feature.

Did you know that you can also label ip address ranges such as 218.*.*.* or 218.*.23.*

It doesn’t have to be just an ip address.

    Thanks for your support!

Hi Jenni, no I did not know that - thanks for the tip :)

Thats a clever little utility! Makes you think that in the future presumably people will be able to track all sorts of things you do. I guess thats why people always go up in arms about what information Google has about us all :-)

That’s a nice plugin but people with dynamic ip’s will be difficult to label, or am I missing something?

  • Hannes Johnson // Mar 4, 2007 at 3:07 am

Yeah, you really can’t label people with dynamic IPs - but a lot of people have static IPs and you can use this for them.

This is a good feature to know your visitors…

I’ve been using Statcounter for a year now and I’m quite happy with it. I’ve yet to start leveraging this new feature but I can see its usefulness. It’s just too bad that Statcounter has such a limited log for free users. But, who can complain with free?
