Why I Love Having An Online Business

February 2nd, 2007 · 13 Comments · 2,444 views

Having a part time online business is great if you don’t have a lot of free time or if you can’t set aside specific hours to work on your business.

For example, right now school is keeping me quite busy and I can only work on my business a few hours per week. But I have several tools that are working for me on autopilot:

  • I still get traffic, subscribers and sales from my AdWords campaigns
  • I still get traffic from organic search engine results
  • I still get visitors (and subscribers) from traffic exchanges
  • My subscribers still get e-mail messages from my autoresponders

It gives you a lot of freedom if you don’t have to work on it 24/7 – it’s alright if I don’t touch my business for a few days. Even if I go on vacation for 2 weeks I might just occasionally check my e-mail…

But it’s not perfect – my business doesn’t grow as fast as it would if I could work on it 24/7 – I also meant to write this post a few days ago but couldn’t find a time to finish it…

A great way to start a part time online business is by promoting products as an affiliate – did you know that I have an affiliate program? ;)

Reminder: The “Top Commentators” that you see in the sidebar is reset every month. February just arrived which means the top spots (with free one-way links) are up for grabs. May the best one win ;)

I hadn’t come across your blog before, until luckily I got an email from you earlier on. Thank goodness I didn’t delete it, as I looked up a few of the blogs, and was pleasantly surprised at the varied content (and the fact that they were written in easy to understand language, which is a bonus for any newbie like me). I was getting a bit fed up of reading, or TRYING to read, loads of technical stuff in some blogs. Undoubtedly, most of the writers know their stuff, but when it’s aimed at more established writers, then I’m afraid that folk like me just leave and look elsewhere.
    Thanks again

I’m glad you liked the posts – always great to get some feedback :)

I was checking out your site and it looks strange in Firefox – maybe you want to check that out and see if you can fix it? It’s probably an HTML/CSS thing…

Hey Hannes… great post! My favorite part about having an online business is that I can work on it from anywhere in the world! I am going to visit family in San Diego this weekened, but thankfully, I can still update my blog! Keep up the good work!

Hannes, you got a great blog going on here! It really is something I want my blog to aspire to be. Even if you put a couple of hours a day into it, the content is rich and I think that’s what counts the most. I’m curious to know how long it took you to build your blog up to this, but you don’t have to share. For me, the journey is more fun than the destination. Keep up the great work!

Gary – thanks, I’ve only had this blog for a month but I do have a few years of blogging experience on other blogs. I have lots of ideas for what I want to write about on this blog – I just need to put words to my thoughts :)

Also, regarding promoting your blog it’s good to be active on other blogs, leave comments and participate. Creating a MyBlogLog community is also a good idea.

Great post, Hannes. One thing I can add is that having an online business offers more statistical control–in realtime! A page isn’t converting–change it and keep tweaking until it starts selling. I wish I can say the same about some offline businesses I’m into. Due to the nature of some of these businesses, there’s not as much control as my online enterprises.

[...] The internet is not going anywhere anytime soon. The questions I presented will have to be addressed countless times in the near future. More and more I see people underestimating the power of the spoken word and taking more stock in those that are typed. Not looking to ban or restrict peoples’ rights of the internet, but I see it as encumbant upon the user to be responsible for their actions. I see both the advantages and disadvantages of our new cyber realm. I have this blog to show for it don’t I. However, our actions online and our thoughts that are typed must respect those close to us who might be affected by them. [...]

Being able to “set it and forget it” is definitely the best part of an online busines.
